Program: Design a series of analyses of the social and urban realities of the neighborhoods of Colonia San Cristóbal and Virgen de Begoña
Scope: Urban analysis and Participation processes
Madrid Nuevo Norte is one of the biggest ongoing developments in Europe. As the development of the entire northern hemisphere of the city, the project and the flow it generates is sure to impact local and surrounding communities economically, socially and environmentally over the next thirty years. As a part of the long term conversation, Madrid Nuevo Norte sought to start a communication process with the neighboring communities to ensure that their needs were met throughout the development. As such, the work carried out by Ecosistema Urbano focused on knowing, analyzing, understanding and integrating the social and urban realities of the neighborhoods of Colonia San Cristóbal and Virgen de Begoña so that the neighborhoods will be prepared for the coming transformations.
The objective of this process has been to understand the challenges and opportunities of both neighborhoods, and doing it hand in hand with the residents through a series of participatory workshops aimed at creating dialogues among citizens about the present and future of their environment (in terms of identity, community, traffic, mobility, accessibility, pricing of property, gentrification risks, density, access to sunlight, among other topics).
The complete process of this participation project took place between November 2021 and May 2022. During these months, Ecosistema Urbano designed a series of qualitative and quantitative analysis processes to identify the major pending issues in each of the neighborhoods, in order to define forums for dialogue in citizen meetings and to delve further into these issues.
