PARKEING

ALCALÁ DE HENARES (ES)

Client: School of Architecture of Alcalá de Henares. Madrid.
Date: 2004
Status: Completed
Program: Student workshop
Scope: Design, coordination, strategy management and implementation

Urban action completed together with students from the School of Architecture of Alcalá. For the action we chose an empty dusty lot adjacent to an area declared a World Heritage zone. We soon discovered that this area had been classified as an urban green zone. However, this space had been used as a parking area for decades, waiting for investment to become a park.

The action took: 150 phone calls, 450 hours of work, 20 tons of recycled asphalt, 5 elm trees planted by a local resident, 7 privets, 3 ginkgo trees, 50 sqm. of aromatic shrubs, 10 truck tires, 10 liters of paint, 2 benches, 20 parking spaces eliminated… A park was completed in 5 days! This park represents the seed of public space for the neighborhood. The action was praised by the locals as a symbolic reconquest of space for people to use, by removing cars.
